History

Shari Rarick Gysel began dancing as a very young child. She was able to take advantage of dance educational instruction weekly by instructors in Grand Rapids, Lansing and Detroit in addition to her own classes in ballet, jazz, acrobatic, tap and modern that she continued from her dance instructors in Battle Creek.

Shari also:

  • Attended Butler University as a dance major while completing High School.
  • Graduated from Paris American Academy as a dance major.
  • Attended Michigan State University.
  • Demonstrated dance technique for Gus Giordano Jazz Dance in Chicago

For over 50 years she has provided excellent dance instruction for the community of Battle Creek through her dance studio. Additionally, she has served the area with dance through teaching in:

  • Battle Creek Public Schools – Ann J. Kellogg Elementary school L.A.S.E.R. program
  • Kellogg Community College – classes in creative movement for teachers
  • Kalamazoo Valley Community College – Social dance and line dancing
  • Children’s Director – Moscow Ballet “Nutcracker” performances since 1999 
  • Children’s Director – Battle Creek Symphony, "Nutcracker" performance
  • Battle Creek Central Hall of Fame

She has mentored countless dance students who have continued dance instruction at her studio in Battle Creek as student teachers, lead teachers, or assistant teachers. Many have gone on in dance professionally and/or educationally throughout the nation.

Dance School Policy

 

Classes Begin Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019!

General Information:

  • Do not wear dance shoes outside! They are designed to wear on our Stage floors.
  • Wear cover-ups to and from the studio.    
  • Please write the name of the student in ALL dance shoes to help find the owner in shoe mix-ups.                                                                             
  • NO gum in class or the studio.                                                                                          
  • We prefer that no large jewelry be worn in class.
  • Bring no valuables to class with you. We cannot be responsible for lost or missing items.                        
  • Please, NO food or drink in the waiting area or dressing rooms.
  • ALL food and drinks must be kept in the eating area. This includes parents and small children.         
  • Please keep the eating area clean!                                                                                          


Tuition:

Classes begin Tuesday, September 3rd!!!!
MONTHLY RATE SCALE PER WEEK/FAMILY (monthly average = 4 classes per month. All rehearsals and performances are educational classes).

1st Subject: $50.00 per month
Each additional Subject: $32.00 per month
Pointe Class: $27.00 per month
   

Tuition is due on the first lesson of every month. A $5.00 LATE FEE will automatically be charged after the 10th of each month. Fill out PAYMENT SLIP each month put in payment box on the desk. We accept cash, check, Visa, Master Card, debit. Several months may be paid together.    

JUNE TUITION - Full payment and attendance are required to participate in the recital. Classes continue the week after the recital.
PRIVATE DANCE CLASSES must be paid for in advance of the class.

*Payments may also be put in the mail slot at any time located to the right of the front door.

If you pay full tuition for September-June, for the entire family account BY September 30, 2019 (with cash, check or money order only) and you will receive TWO FREE June recital tickets.
Voucher to be given by October 15th to be turned in for tickets in May. (Max 2 FREE tickets per family account).
*Only valid for students who start in September. Sorry, no refunds once paid!


Costume Deposit(s) - A non-refundable costume deposit of $60.00 for the June Recital is required for each class. This is due by November 15th. The balance will be due in the Spring. Christmas show costume will be a separate fee.

WHAT TO WEAR - We have a dancewear STORE on site. All shoes (especially ballet) should be BLOCH, CAPEZIO, OR SO DANCA! Other ballet shoes’ soles may cause difficulty balancing on the proper part of the foot, soreness, and unhappy ballerinas. All new students may try the class without dancewear and shoes for the first month only. Please wear stretchy clothes (no zippers or buttons) and socks or barefoot. 


A leotard must be worn in every class and hair tied back by October 1st! This is a studio requirement.

ATTENDANCE POLICY - Classes meet weekly.  Perfect attendance certificates will be awarded during the last class after the recital.  Students are expected to attend every class.  Excused absences may be made up with another similar class. Make-up class forms are at the desk.  The student will give it to the teacher at the beginning of class.


VISITING DAYBlinds will be open the first lesson of each month for viewing.

ADVERSE WEATHER POLICY Dance School closing [due to weather] will be announced on TV Channel 8, on answering machine, on Facebook and https://battlecreekdance.com/ by roughly 2 pm.

VACATION POLICYWe will send home a “Dates to Remember” sheet with the Dance School’s Holiday schedules, extra rehearsals, and other important dates to put on your calendar.

SPECIAL NOTICES -  Check the message window for announcements. Fundraisers, Christmas show sign up, music order, and more. Join us on Facebook for notices. Fundraisers are available for those interested; Profit goes on your account.

CHRISTMAS SHOW - will be Sunday, December 8th (our student’s gift to the community and part of the Festival of Lights). This is a volunteer performance. Students must sign up in October (with clothing size). Students may perform only 1 dance, and acro is not available for performance due to stage size. It is held at Ann J Kellogg Elementary School. Your class will perform at 1:30 or 3 pm as assigned.  

ANNUAL RECITAL - Saturday, June 13th with Dress Rehearsal Date and Time to be announced.  All students are expected to participate as part of their dance education. There is also Run-Thru on the first Friday in early May.  Students are expected to participate in this learning opportunity. Run-Thru is videotaped and reviewed for class improvement. The REHEARSALS and PERFORMANCES are part of June’s lesson.

Goal of the Dance Studio

To provide dance instruction for persons of all ages and abilities.

This is accomplished through dance education and performance. Dance classes are held weekly in all of the dance disciplines of ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics and lyrical, offered at all levels of proficiency from beginner through advanced. Instruction is offered to students with an emphasis on dance technique. There are many opportunities to explore different styles of dance within a dance education at Shari Rarick School of Dance, from classical through contemporary.

Classes which are offered include Ages 2 + through adults of all ages in the disciplines of ballet, jazz, tap, acrobatics, and lyrical. Adult tap and other adult classes are also offered. Please call 269-963-0669 for more information.
